Where these came from
The San Marcos column comes from our daily rent tracking, banked on 2026-11-07. The Austin column comes from our tracking in that market, as of 2026-11-06. Drive times are one reading with live traffic, last measured 2026-09-09. Rents come from apartment data we buy and our own research, and a few of the bought figures can be estimates.
At the one bedroom size, the median starting rent is $1,040 here against $1,149 there, so the gap is $109 a month in our favor. Both come from our daily rent tracking, ours as of 2026-11-07 and theirs as of 2026-11-06.
The median community here is 53 minutes out and the median one there is 28, so 25 minutes more each way. On a five day commute that is roughly 208 hours a year more in the car.
The same kinds of sources ours do: apartment data we buy, records our team keeps and our daily property research, each column carrying its own date. It is not a survey or a national average. Some figures in the data we buy can be estimates, on both sides alike.
This page will not tell you. The honest answer turns on what an hour of your evening is worth, and no dataset holds that. What we can do is walk both markets with you and say which specific buildings are worth your time. That part is free.
